The Department of Energy in the USA (DOE) isolates transuranic waste (TRU) generated by research and by the production of nuclear weapons at a depth of 650 m in a horizontal formation of Permian rock salt which has a thickness of 1,000 metres, 40 km east of Carlsbad, New Mexico at the so called Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP).
