The objective of the underground disposal of radioactive waste is to safely store this waste on a long-term basis and to permanently keep it away from the biosphere and particularly from our habitat. This objective is to be achieved by a system of different barriers. The so-called many or multiple barrier system principally consists of different single barriers, where a distinction is made between natural and technical barriers.
